Renowned for the quality of its treatments and products, Bodia is more than a brand—it’s the story of four passionate individuals deeply in love with Cambodia. These entrepreneurs fervently believe in the benefits of producing natural, locally sourced products, embarking on a remarkable human adventure.
Cambodia, 2005…
The small town of Siem Reap sits serenely between the vast, fish-rich Tonlé Sap Lake and a dense tropical forest, where the mysterious temples of Angkor slowly reveal their grandeur along winding paths. At the time, a handful of hotels and guesthouses dotted the dirt roads, serving as gateways for tourists venturing to explore these ancient ruins. Time seemed to stand still in this lush landscape, guarding the remnants of a bygone empire.
But change was in the air. Dirt paths became paved roads, construction projects picked up speed, and restaurants refined their offerings as more visitors arrived each year. Tourists were drawn by the awe-inspiring architecture of the temples, the verdant rice paddies, and the peaceful pace of life in a welcoming atmosphere.
The Beginnings of an Idea
Amid this transformation, Sylvain Perrier, a Frenchman living in Phnom Penh, felt a unique connection to Cambodia. His bond with the country began in childhood, when his family welcomed Sambath, a Cambodian refugee, into their home. That relationship fueled Sylvain’s interest in the country, and upon visiting, he was captivated. Seizing the opportunities of a developing nation, he and his business partner, Kimchhan, established Cambodia's first network of quality pharmacies, providing an alternative to the counterfeit medications that plagued the local market.
Inspired by the country’s cultural and economic evolution, Sylvain and Kimchhan envisioned a new project: reimagining Khmer massage and offering it in luxurious urban day spas. While massage is a cherished tradition in Cambodia, it is sometimes associated with disreputable practices. The pair wanted to restore its reputation and elevate the art of Khmer wellness.
A Vision Comes to Life
During a trip to Paris, Sylvain met Quentin Clausin, a talented designer eager to leave behind the frenetic pace of Western life. Quentin embraced the challenge of creating a serene, authentic experience in line with Sylvain and Kimchhan’s vision. Together, they developed a comprehensive concept blending architecture, design, and wellness.
The first Bodia Spa in Siem Reap opened in June 2006. The architectural design, led by ASMA Architects, featured a harmonious mix of open spaces and intimate treatment alcoves, using local materials and craftsmanship. Treatments were crafted under the guidance of Srey Thom, an experienced Cambodian therapist, who spent a year developing natural routines using local ingredients like rice powder scrubs, fruit wraps, and essential oils.
The spa quickly gained recognition for its exceptional quality, becoming a must-visit destination for travelers in Siem Reap. By 2009, it was listed among Asia's top 40 spas by Condé Nast Traveler.
Expanding Horizons
Following the success of the Siem Reap spa, Bodia expanded to Phnom Penh and partnered with luxury hotels to enhance their offerings. The founders also saw potential in creating natural cosmetic products inspired by Khmer remedies. In 2007, they welcomed Antoine Bancel, an engineer passionate about Cambodia's rich pharmacological heritage. Together, they developed a line of innovative, all-natural cosmetics under the brand Bodia – The Cambodian Apothecary.
In 2008, a research and production lab was established in Siem Reap, later moving to Phnom Penh to support larger-scale operations. By combining local traditions with international cosmetic standards, Bodia became Cambodia’s first certified cosmetics brand to export to Europe.
A Commitment to Sustainability and Social Responsibility
Bodia has always prioritized eco-friendly and socially responsible practices. The company partners with NGOs, local farmers, and artisans to promote sustainable production, protect the environment, and preserve traditional skills. Partnerships with organizations like Fauna & Flora International and Agrisud exemplify this commitment.
A Legacy of Excellence
Fifteen years after its founding, Bodia operates five unique spas across Cambodia and has become a beloved brand among Cambodians and international customers alike. Its natural products, rooted in traditional remedies, are now available worldwide, including through its online store.
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bodia has preserved most of its workforce and is ready to welcome visitors once again. With over 300 employees and a team of passionate founders, Bodia continues to thrive, embodying its philosophy of combining quality, sustainability, and social responsibility.
